Caring for your Ugg Boots
Ugg boots, like any product made from natural material need to be cared for properly. A good pair of ugg boots will last for years but only if there are treated with respect.
An indoor shoe
Ugg boots were traditionally designed as an indoor shoe. A sheepskin barrier seal can be purchased from most ugg retailers. Simply spraying a barrier seal onto the boot will protect the sheepskin and make it water-resistant.
It is not possible to make sheepskin totally waterproof and exposure to large amounts of water will damage and stain the hide.
Removing scuff marks from ugg boots
Like any footwear, ugg boots are prone to becoming scuffed and marked. Black or dark colored ugg boots will also often pick up dust or white flecks. The easiest way to remove scuffs or flecks is to lightly brush the boot with a piece of foam.
Brush the whole boot in the one direction to give a smooth even appearance. A cloth or rag will not be as effective in removing scuffmarks and may increase the number of flecks on the boot.
Washing your ugg boots
Actual stains on the boot will not brush off and may not even wash out. However ugg boots can be washed and normal dirt or grime from daily wear can be removed. Washing your ugg boots will give life back into the flattened inner fleece and freshen up the outer hide.
Manufacturers recommend ugg boots be hand washed and it is always advisable to follow manufacturers care instructions.
I have however frequently washed ugg boots on a gentle wool wash cycle in the washing machine. Use only cold or warm water. It is important not to use hot water as it may weaken glue and cause shrinking.
A mild wool wash detergent should always be used when washing ugg boots. It is also possible to purchase a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically for sheepskin. It is designed to protect against mould and mildew and has antiseptic properties.
Ugg boots cannot be dried in a clothes dryer. They must be air dried, preferably hanging upside down from the sole and away from heat and direct sunlight. The boots will take several days to dry completely.
After washing ugg boots can be sprayed with a sheepskin barrier seal and once dry can be brushed with a piece of foam to create a smooth even appearance.
If cared for properly your ugg boots should last for years.
